February PD Academy: Nido Learns Together has ended

The February 14 PD Academy day will focus on building Nido faculty knowledge and capacity to better serve our language learner and learning support populations.  The professional development on February 14 will be delivered in a manner that asks Nido faculty to collectively process their learning in divisions, and how they plan to apply it in the coming semester.

  • This workshop was offered on the Nov. 29 half-day.
As Nido admits more students with limited or no English, you are likely to find them in your classroom. The good news is beginner ELLs usually demonstrate high motivation to learn English quickly. The challenge? Beginners require quite a bit of time and patience. They are learning your classroom content in English at the same time they are learning the language of English! No small feat. This workshop will offer classroom teachers some strategies for helping beginner ELLs participate and find success in the classroom community.
We will explore:
  • General Strategies
  • How to encourage beginners in writing
  • How to maximize the effectiveness of classroom buddies
  • How to use a student’s first-language skills while also promoting English
  • How to use technology as more than a babysitter
  • How to plan differentiated assignments without diluting the learning target
This workshop is targeted to ES homeroom teachers
Shared Beliefs of Teaching and Learning Focus:
  1. Risk taking, mistakes, and productive struggle are necessary and valuable to the learning process.
  2. Students learn at different rates and different ways.
